A Training for CSOs on Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence Held in April in an Effort to Present The Risks of Data Processing Projects Using AI Systems
As part of their Greater Internet Freedom Project, Partners Serbia held their Privacy and Artificial Intelligence (AI) training, intended for representatives of civil society organizations. The training was held on 6 April 2023.
With the development of data processing projects and initiatives using artificial intelligence systems, especially those coming from public authorities (such as the Social Card system and biometric surveillance of public areas), the need to understand the risks these processes pose for human rights and freedoms is growing. Civil society organizations and human rights defenders should be prepared to recognize these risks and provide adequate protection to their beneficiaries. Therefore, this training aimed to present participants with the basics of the functioning of artificial intelligence systems, as well as to improve their understanding of the importance of the data on which these systems are based.
The trainings were organized as part of the Greater Internet Freedom Project, supported by the Internews Network.
The existing mechanisms of protection of rights of citizens were presented at the training, with the focus on the right to protection of personal data, in cases of incidents caused by the use of artificial intelligence, with special focus on the protection of members of vulnerable groups.
The training was held by Ana Toskic Cvetinovic, Executive Director of Partners Serbia, Andjelka Zecevic, researcher at the Mathematics Institute of the Serbian Academy of Sciences, Bogdan Banjac, independent advisor in the department for cooperation and European integration of the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, and Danilo Curcic, Program Coordinator of the A11 Initiative for Economic and Social Rights.
After the event, Partners Serbia also held one tailored training to the representatives of the Commissioner for Equality, in cooperation with Andjelka Zecevic from the Mathematics Institute of Serbian Academy of Sciences.
