This year, we organized the fifth consecutive Privacy Week! This year's Privacy Week focused on issues of privacy and data protection, with a particular emphasis on protecting the rights of the most vulnerable groups, including activists and journalists.

In the wake of global and local political events, we felt it was imperative to emphasize that the defense of privacy is, in fact, the defense of freedom. That's why we decided to hold this conference, despite the turbulent events and societal tensions.

The protection of the right to privacy is a fundamental human right, but this inalienable aspect of freedom remains a significant challenge for many democracies, including our own. Jeopardizing the right to privacy leads to jeopardizing equality and even security. Despite this, only two out of more than 50 media portals in Serbia respect privacy protection rules. Spyware has been used for a decade, not only for protection against terrorism and organized crime but also for monitoring investigative journalists and activists.

These are the key messages from the central event of Privacy Week 2025, which marked the International Day for the Protection of Personal Data.

During the central conference, we also discussed the synergy between personal data protection and the fight against discrimination, the protection of digital rights of citizens outside the European Union's regulatory space, the so-called Brussels effect, the protection of medical data during the development of artificial intelligence models, and other topics.

With this year's slogan Privacy for all! we wanted to highlight the responsibility of everyone - from corporations and state authorities to the civil sector - to protect the most vulnerable. We also wanted to emphasize the importance of coming together in the fight for the right to privacy, opening space for discussion and expressing opinions because we believe that, especially in such a turbulent political climate, it is essential to talk about the right to privacy and fight for it together with all the mechanisms at our disposal.
